How This Work

Most of our clients come to us while they are currently paying council tax without issue.

Our role is not to tell people to stop paying — it is to explain what must legally be in place for council tax to be enforceable, and to check whether the council has actually followed that process.

Step 1 – Understanding Your Position

We start by reviewing your situation, whether you are:

• Paying by direct debit

• Paying manually

• Unsure whether the billing or summons you've received is correct

We explain:

• What makes council tax legally enforceable

• What steps the council must follow before enforcement is lawful

• Where many councils commonly make procedural errors

Step 2 – Explaining Your Options

We then talk you through the options available to you, including:

• The legal position around cancelling a direct debit while checking compliance

• The risks and implications of arrears

• How the Direct Debit Guarantee works, including chargebacks

• How far back chargebacks may be possible

• What is generally considered a fair, proportionate, and legally safer timeframe to challenge

We do not tell you to take any action — we explain what is possible, so you can decide.

Step 3 – Waiting for Council Response

If you choose to pause payments or raise a dispute, we wait for the council to respond.

At this stage, councils often issue:

• Summons-style letters

• "Liability order" claims

• Enforcement warnings

We then step in.

Step 4 – Due Process Challenge

We draft formal responses for you to send, requiring the council to demonstrate that they have:

• Followed the correct statutory process

• Issued and relied upon valid documentation

• Acted with proper authority

We verify whether what they are relying on is:

• Legally binding

• Procedurally correct

• Accurately represented

Step 5 – Clear Advice on Enforceability

Once we review their response, we explain one of two positions:

If the council has followed due process correctly: We tell you immediately, and you may need to pay or resolve the balance.

If the council has NOT followed due process: We explain why enforcement is currently not lawful, why the correspondence carries no legal force at this stage, and what that means in practical terms.

Step 6 – Ongoing Support

While the matter is unresolved, we:

• Review every new letter

• Draft responses for you to issue

• Explain which communications require action and which do not

We stay with you throughout — always focused on process, not avoidance.

Our Position

We don't cancel debts. We don't ignore the law. We make sure the council follows it before asking you to pay. If at any point the process becomes lawful and enforceable, we will tell you immediately.

Council Tax Disputes – How We Help

We do not promise to "cancel" council tax or tell people to ignore the law. What we do is make sure the council has followed every required legal step before trying to force payment.

In our experience, in the vast majority of cases, they haven't.

How the Process Really Works

Council tax is only enforceable after the council has followed strict legal steps, including proper notices and a valid liability order granted by the magistrates' court.

Until that process is lawfully completed, the council may send letters, threats, and warnings — but they cannot force payment.

This creates a situation known as procedural deadlock:

• Lots of noise

• No legal enforcement power

• No forced payment

Many people remain in this position for years, simply because the council never completes the process properly.

What We Do for You

Step 1 – Full Case Review

We gather and review every letter, notice, summons-style document, and demand the council has sent.

Step 2 – Due Process Check

We check:

• Whether notices were served correctly

• Whether a genuine, lawful liability order exists

• Whether the council has relied on council-generated paperwork dressed up as court authority

• Whether the sums demanded are even correct

Step 3 – Challenge & Verification

We force the council to prove its authority before enforcement, not after. If documents are misleading or procedurally defective, we challenge them.

Step 4 – Deadlock Protection

If due process has not been followed (which is very common):

• The council cannot lawfully enforce payment

• Bailiffs, threats, and warning letters carry no legal force

• You are protected from escalation

At this point, nothing "happens" other than letters — and we explain exactly why those letters are meaningless.

Step 5 – Ongoing Monthly Support

Under our continuing care package, we:

• Respond to the council on your behalf

• Shut down empty threats

• Keep the matter stalled lawfully

• Explain each new letter so you know when it matters — and when it doesn't

Important Honesty (This Matters)

If at any point the council does follow due process correctly, we will tell you immediately. If they obtain a valid liability order and enforcement becomes lawful:

• We will not tell you to ignore it

• We will help you understand your options

• You may need to pay or agree a lawful arrangement

We are upfront about this from day one.
